On 27 May 2026, I gave a Speech on Public Support for a Gas Tax
Transcript:
Ms WATSON-BROWN (Ryan)
Thank you Deputy Speaker.
Here's some people the government should be listening to about a 25% tax on gas exports, instead of the gas lobbyists.
Jakub asks: ‘How is it possible that the government of Japan collects more taxes from reselling Australian gas than the government of Australia?’
Great question, Jakub.
Alan says ‘both sides of politics have been compromised by the GAS and MINERALS industries. Money is changing hands constantly .... TAX GAS.'
Jason: ‘stop the donations, gifts, sponsorships, whatever you wanna call it, from these big corporations. Major conflict of interest, and having an influence on a decision.'
Julia: ‘by not taxing gas corporations they are alienating the very people who voted for them, which was the majority of us. Tax the gas!'
Dean: Tax the gas
Niyazi: Tax the gas
Robert: Tax the gas
Chris: Tax the gas. Now!
Rosa: Tax them!
Ash says ‘My wife is a teacher and constantly told "we can't afford pay rises" ’ - and rightly points out that education, along with other public services that could be funded with the $17 billion this tax would raise.
Kieran: Our gas sales should be beneficial to our children’s children, not Multinational corporations.
Hear hear.
