Toowong Village Commuter Chats - Gas Tax Petition

Gas corporations have been making record profits selling Australian gas to overseas markets. But they are paying hardly any tax. Major gas corporation Santos has posted $47 billion in revenue over the last ten years, but paid $0 in corporate tax. More than half of our gas is exported completely royalty-free.

These are our resources, and we should be getting our fair share from them. You shouldn’t be paying more tax than a giant gas corporation.

For months now, The Greens, along with the entire crossbench, have been pushing the government to implement a 25% tax on the export revenue of gas companies in Australia. This is a simple tax that is very hard for corporations to dodge.

Momentum is building for this idea. Only a few weeks ago, the government admitted that they have requested the Treasury to model this tax for the upcoming budget.

The gas lobby is incredibly powerful and has deep personal connections with both major parties. Major gas corporations like Santos and Woodside also donate millions to Labor and the Liberals. The Labor government could well cave to the gas industry and short-change Australians again.

If we’re going to take on those vested interests and win a fair return from our natural resources, we need to apply maximum pressure – now.

Rush hour is a great time to be visible to the public as they travel through the city for work, so come along and ask the public to sign our petition! If you're new to commuter chatting, we will pair you up with an experienced volunteer, so you can learn the ropes and take it as slow as you like.
