In a wealthy country like Australia, everyone should have access to a safe and secure roof over their head.
With the Greens negotiating in parliament this term, we secured a 6x increase in funding for social and community housing.
When the major parties are content to give $176 billion in tax handouts to wealthy property speculators, renters and first home buyers are pushed out of the market.
The Greens will push to:
- Establish a non-profit, government owned developer to build genuinely affordable, quality homes for renters and first home buyers. This will guarantee that homes are built even during a building sector downturn.
- Give first home buyers a chance by phasing out negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount for people with more than one investment property.
- Regulate the banks to deliver fairer, lower mortgages.
- Put a cap on how much rents can go up by at 2% every two years, so rents stop outpacing inflation.
Our policies are fully costed by the independent Parliamentary Budget Office, and would be funded by making billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share in tax.
